Join the World Chess Hall of Fame for a virtual concert event presented by the Rader String Quartet. Comprised of Class of 2020 high school graduates Theo Bockhorst and Ethan Mayer, violins, Jacob Sheldon, viola and Alex Cho, cello, the group was formed under the auspices of the Preparatory Program of Webster University’s Community Music School and co-sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis. The Rader String Quartet has won prizes in national competitions, including first place at the 2020 St. Paul String Quartet Competition, and exemplifies the incredible talent of young Saint Louis musicians.
In a program ranging from solo and quartet music of Baroque master J.S. Bach, to Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera, to contemporary Danish folk music, the Rader’s will showcase the transformation of music over time as it has changed and adapted to different eras and parts of our world. Rader Quartet cellist, Alex Cho, remarks that “music has always been used as a way for composers to express the excitement and struggles of their moment while serving as a way for us to peer into the past. For example, Haydn’s quartets focused on the art of conversation as a noble man in the 1700s while Ginastera’s quartet focused on the rowdy and dangerous Gaucho culture of South American cowboys of the 1900s. As musicians, we hope that we are able to serve as mediators to tell the history of the world through its composers and an art form which transcends the boundaries of language and culture.”
This virtual concert event will include pre-recorded performance videos, segments from an interview of the group with World Chess Hall of Fame Music Director, Bjorn Ranheim, as well as the world-premier of a collaborative video performance created specifically for this concert.
